- Who should/shouldn’t buy; edge cases
The short
- What: A ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass for non-commercial vehicles; valid for one year or 200 toll-plaza crossings, whichever comes first.
- Where: ~1,150 toll plazas on National Highways & National Expressways (NHAI network).
- How: Activate via the RajmargYatra app or NHAI website; typical activation within ~2 hours.
- Uptake: 5 lakh+ users in the first four days since the Aug 15 launch; southern states led early adoption.
Who actually saves
Rule: Each plaza crossing counts toward the 200 cap. If a round trip touches N plazas per direction, that’s 2N crossings per round trip. Heavier highway users exhaust the pass faster and save more.
Good fit
- Intercity commuters (sales, services) on NH/expressways
- Frequent airport/industrial-corridor users (private LMVs)
- Families doing regular weekend drives across states
Probably skip
- Occasional highway users (< 1 round trip/month)
- City-only drivers (few or zero NH plazas)
- Commercial vehicles (not eligible)
Break-even planner (illustrative)
Plazas / round trip | Avg toll / plaza (₹) | Round trips to break-even* | Max round trips covered (200 crossings) | Pay-as-you-go for 200 crossings (₹) | Savings vs pass if you hit 200 (₹) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 75 | 10 | 50 | 15,000 | 12,000 |
2 | 120 | 7 | 50 | 24,000 | 21,000 |
2 | 150 | 5 | 50 | 30,000 | 27,000 |
4 | 75 | 5 | 25 | 15,000 | 12,000 |
4 | 120 | 4 | 25 | 24,000 | 21,000 |
4 | 150 | 3 | 25 | 30,000 | 27,000 |
6 | 75 | 4 | 16 | 15,000 | 12,000 |
6 | 120 | 3 | 16 | 24,000 | 21,000 |
6 | 150 | 2 | 16 | 30,000 | 27,000 |
*Method: Break-even ≈ ceil(₹3,000 ÷ (avg toll × plazas × 2)). Savings assume you fully consume all 200 crossings; real-world routes and non-NHAI plazas vary.
Activation — step by step
- Check eligibility: Private/non-commercial LMV with an active FASTag and KYC done.
- Open RajmargYatra app (or NHAI website) → Annual Pass → enter vehicle/FASTag details.
- Pay ₹3,000 (one-time). Activation typically reflects within ~2 hours.
- Drive as usual: Crossings on participating NH/expressway plazas auto-debit from your Annual Pass balance (until 200 crossings or 12 months).
Tip Track crossings in the app to avoid surprises near the 200-crossing limit.
Fine print & edge cases
- Coverage: Applicable on ~1,150 National Highway & National Expressway plazas onboarded to the scheme; state/private roads may not be covered.
- Validity: Ends on the earlier of 12 months or 200 crossings. After that, normal tolls apply.
- Vehicle-bound: Tied to your FASTag/vehicle; non-transferable.
- Commercial use: The launch is for non-commercial vehicles.
FAQ
- Is it “unlimited”? No. It’s capped at 200 toll-plaza crossings or 1 year, whichever comes first.
- What if toll rates change mid-year? Your cap is by crossings, not rupee amount; rate changes don’t affect the 200 limit.
