The team behind it includes marine biologists, data scientists, and retired submariners — a rare mix. One researcher jokes, “We’re building Alexa for the ocean.” But the tone shifts when privacy comes up: should every sound in shared waters be logged forever?

“The ocean has always had a voice,” says project lead Dr Menon. “We’re only now learning to listen without shouting back.”
